SILVERJET                                                                                         Posted:  11/29/06

Silverjet, a low-fare British airline offering a premiere, enhanced business-class style service between the New York Tri-State area and London, said tickets are now available for purchase by U.S. passengers on its website, www.flysilverjet.com.  Having just flown Eos four times in the last year, I am guessing that this is a direct competitor.  It will be hard to top Eos!

Silverjet's first flight is due to take to the sky on January 25, 2007 with roundtrip fares starting as low as $1,798.  Silverjet will offer its "Silver Class" non-stop service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Luton Airport, the least congested of London's four major airports.  With a focus on providing a premium service at a reasonable cost, the Silver Class experience aims to eliminate the stress associated with transatlantic business travel.  Passengers can check-in for their flight as little as 30 minutes in advance of departure time.  Speedy curbside check-in services are offered on both sides of the trip.  Each of the 100 seats on board the airline's specially outfitted Boeing 767-200s features a flat bed for maximum comfort and a comprehensive entertainment system complete with movies, games and popular television shows.  Eos offers just 48 sleeper seat/beds on its aircraft, offering more space per passenger.  Gourmet meals can be pre-ordered prior to the flight and all passengers enjoy access to Silverjet's exclusive airport lounges at both Newark and Luton.  It is worth checking into!      www.flysilverjet.com

DRIVING ARIZONA                                          Posted:  01/12/07

Dear Nan:

We are interested in spending a few weeks "getting to know" a warm US state "behind the steering wheel of an   automobile" this winter.  Could you make a suggestion, one we could “Mapquest” from a major city?

Scott T                    Memphis, TN

Dear Scott:

Load up on glossy colorful maps and driving directions...how's "Arizona or Bust" sound to you?  Arizona is a land of spectacular beauty, history and some crazy stuff to boot.  The Grand Canyon State features these along its vast roadways, which truly makes the journey as fun as the diverse destination itself.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • 23 Scenic Roads crisscross the state, so you'll never be far from a picturesque drive.  In the northern part of the state, Kayenta-Monument Valley Scenic Road and Red Rock Scenic Road wind through fascinating rock formations.  In the southern half you will experience the Sonoran Desert along Apache Trail Historic Road and the high desert terrain on Patagonia-Sonoita Scenic Road in Arizona’s wine country.  For Scenic Roads in Arizona, go to www.arizonascenicroads.com
  • Get your kicks on Route 66— Cutting across northern Arizona, from the border with California to the border with New Mexico, this is a famed stretch of road, which we drove a stretch of last year.   From the wild burros roaming the streets of Oatman to the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert in the east, there's much to see.  Some favorites include the Hackberry General Store, the delicious Snow Cap Drive-In in Seligman, the Meteor Crater and the La Posada Hotel in Winslow.  Some strange roadside places from “The Thing” just off Interstate 10 southeast of Tucson to the original London Bridge located in Lake Havasu City are along the way.  You can check out a grove of date trees east of Yuma and unique date shakes, or the mysterious frog rock along highway 89 southwest of Prescot.

You can fly into Phoenix, Tucson or even Las Vegas and grab a rental car.  Now with the spankin new TripTik Online Mapping from AAA (aka The American Automobile Association) you can log on to find gas stations and gas prices along your route and avoid becoming among the more than 2.5 million people carrying a red gas can along a lonely road.  AAA's yearly membership fee pays for itself instantly.  www.aaa.com

To plan your Arizona driving tour, go to www.arizonaguide.com  and www.mapquest.com for more driving details. Enjoy.
